Image to Base64

Embed a small picture straight into HTML, CSS or an email template. The image is read on your device, not uploaded.

Your files stay with you. Your files never leave your browser. This tool runs on your device: nothing is uploaded to our servers, so there is nothing for us to store or see.

How to use it

  1. Choose the image.
  2. Pick the output you need: data URI, plain Base64, HTML tag or CSS.
  3. Copy it or download it as a text file.

Questions people ask

What is a Base64 image good for?
It lets you put a picture inside your code, so the page needs no separate file request. It suits tiny icons and logos in HTML emails, CSS or JSON.
Why is the text longer than the file?
Base64 turns every 3 bytes into 4 characters, so the text is about one third bigger than the image.
Should I use Base64 for large photos?
No. Large Base64 strings slow the page and cannot be cached on their own. Use them for images under about 10 KB and compress the picture first.
Is the picture uploaded?
No. It is read and encoded in your browser.
